The bible tells us God is a tripartite being, meaning He is three persons in one. Well, God made man in his image and likeness. Man is also a tripartite being. Man is comprised of spirit, soul, and body. Your body is your physical self. It is the part God made from the dust of the ground. Your soul is that part which makes you uniquely you. It is your mind (intellect), will, emotions, and personality. Your spirit is the piece that came from God, Himself. God is a spirit being. Your spirit is a part of God. It gives you the ability to communicate and fellowship with God. It is the link between the created and the creator. Think of it like this: you are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body.
Before the fall, Adam could easily use his spirit to walk and talk with God in the Garden of Eden. After the fall the link between man's soul and spirit was broken. Not only did Adam's sin cause the process of physical death to begin, it caused immediate spiritual death. Death is nothing more than separation. Physical death is the separation of your spirit and soul from your physical body. There is a worse death. Spiritual death means being separated from God. Since the spirit could no longer hear from God, the soul became corrupted, having fallen under the control and authority of Satan (the devil).
Jesus came to remove the sin of Adam so the original link could be reestablished. When a person asks Jesus into their heart as their savior, a type of re-birth takes place. The spirit man is regenerated. That is why it is called being 'born again.' The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, actually comes to indwell the believer. The Holy Spirit enables the human spirit to communicate again with God. Only a spirit can communicate with another spirit. God is spirit and so man can only communicate with Him through his human spirit.
